In our first article in this issue, we explore our work with Renzo Piano's Building Workshop on the delivery of the San Nicola Stadium in Bari - one of 12 venues for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Arup’s particular involvement was to study the geometry for the stadium and at the same time devise a structural scheme consistent with the desired aesthetic and compatible with the established geometry.

Authors Richard Cowell and Nick Boulter look at the work of our acoustic team in Hong Kong. Projects touched upon include the full acoustic consultancy for the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and work at the new University of Science and Technology.

In the UK, we look at a number of projects, including our involvement in the design and delivery of four sections of the M40 motorway and our work on Lintrathen water treatment works on Tayside.
