The Innovent Biologics Global Research and Development Center in Shanghai represents a significant milestone in advancing biopharmaceutical research in the region.

Spanning approximately 37,000m² in site area and 169,000m² in building floor area, the centre is strategically located in Qianwan Park within the vibrant Shanghai Hongqiao International Central Business District. This location is ideally positioned to drive advancements in oncology, metabolism, immunology and ophthalmology research.

Appointed by Innovent Biotechnology Co., Ltd, Arup provided multidisciplinary services including architecture, structural, MEP, façade, fire, traffic and sustainability to establish this cutting-edge biopharmaceutical R&D hub.

Our design establishes a sanctuary for scientists to rejuvenate, immerse in seasonal beauty and elevate their research experience. This project encapsulates our unwavering commitment to innovation, collaboration and sustainability in scientific facilities.

Facilitating collaboration and innovation

Emphasising the significance of multidisciplinary collaboration in pharmaceutical innovation, our design philosophy prioritised creating an environment conducive to interaction and creativity. The architectural layout strategically positions building clusters at the centre of the complex, surrounded by natural elements. Enhanced spatial connections horizontally and vertically facilitate seamless mobility and communication across the interconnected R&D towers, fostering a dynamic and productive work environment.

Fostering sustainability and comfort

Leveraging our global expertise in multidisciplinary research and experimental architecture, we introduced a 4,000m² canopy in the central area. This innovative feature forms a semi-outdoor atrium with natural ventilation and breaks the sense of enclosure of traditional laboratory setups.

The bridges connecting the towers are adorned with glass louvres, providing shelter from wind and rain while enhancing transparency. Users traversing these bridges enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, while onlookers outside appreciate the towering 60m façade and inviting semi-public spaces.

The surrounding space is an important component of the R&D centre. Our design team integrated the open spaces and artificial landscapes with the natural environment, allowing the scientists to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy fresh air and seasonal beauty amid their busy work.
