Net Zero Plan
We have committed to becoming a science-based net zero organisation by 2040
Last updated: January 2025
How we're governed
We recognise the value of transparency around organisational governance, how businesses are led and managed, and how stakeholder considerations are reflected in decision making, and our governance reflects that.
Our Net Zero Plan details how we will achieve our targets and become a net zero organisation by taking action across three priority areas: our offices, our travel and our supply chain.
We have made significant progress in decarbonizing our operations since setting our initial targets. We have exceeded our near-term science-based emissions reduction goals: reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2025 – achieving an 88% reduction – and reducing Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2025 – achieving a 35% reduction.
We are proud of the progress we have made toward our emissions reduction targets. While this achievement represents a major milestone, it is just one step on our longer journey to becoming a Net Zero organization by 2040.

Our targets
Our near- and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets and science-based net zero target are set out below. These have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiatives (SBTi) and are in line with 1.5oC mitigation pathways – currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process.
Scope 1 & 2: SBTi Absolute emission reduction targets*
Target
(by 2025)
88% achieved in 2025
Target
(by 2030)
Maintained
(through to 2040)
Achieve science-based net zero
Scope 3**: SBTi Absolute emission reduction targets*
Target
(by 2025)
29.5% achieved in 2024
Target
(by 2030)
Target
(by 2040)
Achieve science-based net zero
* All targets relate to a baseline year of 2019.
** Scope 3 relates to those emission categories within the SBTi target reporting boundary including purchased goods and services, capital goods, waste, business travel and employee commuting. Arup also monitors additional Scope 3 categories, but these are outside of the SBTi target reporting boundary. All targets relate to a baseline year of 2019.
We report our GHG emissions annually in our Financial Statements and Annual Report. Our emission results have undergone third party assurance. Read our complete ESG assurance statement here.
