We begin this issue with David Singleton's 2002/03 Brunel International Lecture 'Poverty alleviation: the role of the engineer'. David explores how the creation of well-planned and designed infrastructure can help alleviate poverty and spur economic development.

Taking this message to heart, we look at a number of projects that aim to deliver substantial benefits to their local or national communities.

In Zimbabwe, we discover how Arup's local practice has been working to deliver a vital new road link, whilst in London we look at the BedZED housing scheme.

We also take a detailed look at the design behind the City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester's impressive sporting venue conceived to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
